long time, no write

Hello all. Yes, I realize I have been a slacker in the blogging department. Well, I wish I had a really great reason. But I don't. Does it count that I feel like I've barely been home over the last month? Or that when I have been home we've been trying to get the house ready for showings? Or that I've been at work late? Or been busy packing for the next trip? Or that I haven't been as diligent about getting the recommended daily workout in?
Well, those are my excuses. So now I need to start fresh again. The last month will not be repeated.
On a positive note, we have been busy fundraising and planning new fundraisers. Stay tuned for more info.
On a sad note, I got home from Las Vegas yesterday to news that Otis (the world's best dog) had been taken to the Doggie ER because he had ingested ibuprofen. He will hopefully be coming home tonight. We visited him yesterday right after I flew back in. He has a cone on his poor little head and an IV in his leg. Unfortunately he gets all worked up after visitors leave and has to get a little sedative to calm him down. :( I feel so bad for him. But like I said, he should be coming home tonight. Cross your fingers.

New beginnings for everyone!
XO,
Carly

Here's to a new beginning!

back from LA

Greetings...

I am exhausted. I just returned from LA. We were gone for a week. I totally meant to be blogging while we were there, but I didn't have access to a computer. And there is no way I was going to attempt this on my phone.
We had a great trip. It was all very informative. I feel like a student every time we are there. The weather was pretty nice. Rained a little. Was really chilly last night. Saw 2 celebs. Simon Cowell (I never watch American Idol) and Ian Ziering (I loved 90210). Big whoop. There it is.
Got to hang with friends. Met some new peoples. Did some exploring on foot. Hiked around Runyon Canyon for about 40 minutes. Did a walk (now referred to as the Rock Walk by Howie) that was about 3.5 miles. It took us from our friend Rachel's apartment in West Hollywood on a loop from about Sweetzer and Fountain, down to Santa Monica to the Troubador (music venue), up Doheny (steep hill) to the Key Club on Sunset, past all the hot spots- Rainbow Room, Whiskey Bar, Viper Room (RIP River Phoenix), Sky Bar, Standard Hotel, and back down Sweetzer to the apartment.
Whew! It was an awesome walk.
When we got home we decided to take Otis for a walk. So we just did a little 25 minute late night stroll with him. About 1.2 miles. Otis has short legs and has to stop and sniff every 300 feet, so I blame our slow timing on him. Dang it's cold out. Where's spring?
Ok. Good night. I'm going to bed. I'll keep you posted on my next run/walk. Gotta check the schedule.
XO,
Carly

3 miles for Tuesday

Hello Ladies and Gents,

Last night after work Howie and I headed over to the JCC for some training. I completed a 3 mile walk in 51 minutes and 12 seconds. Howie was on the treadmill right next to me and he ran 6.2 miles faster than I walked the 3 miles. He had his "personal record" for a 10k. Apparently that is what PR stands for. See, I'm learning all these new terms regarding running. Who am I????

We cleared out of the J by 10pm and headed over to CCF (aka Cheese Cake Factory, aka the only place open for dinner at 10pm after the gym closes and I'm too tired to cook). I drank about 96 ounces of their delicious tropical iced tea and was awake till 1:30 am. Again. I am starting to see a correlation between caffeine and me not being able to go to sleep. I forced myself to bed.

This morning I woke up at about 4:30. Forced myself back to bed. Ultimately I woke up at 9am. I made Kale Chips. Remind me to give you that recipe sometime. So easy. Love them. Got the house all in order before leaving for work. Howie and I are flying to LA tonight. I can't wait. Part business, part vacation. I put aside some healthy snacks for the plane. Apples, carrots, clementines (what will Howie do when that season is over???), and an avocado.
It's almost 3:30. Two more haircuts to go. Then off to the airport.....

I'll be in touch soon. Oh, I'm supposed to do 20 minutes of walking or a rest today. I figure I'll pace around the terminal waiting for the flight. Sound good? I thought so too.
Bye!

Getting all fit-like

I ended up at the JCC this afternoon. I decided to swim. It had been a while. But I have a new suit, so what the heck. I logged about 25 minutes. I lost track of how many laps I did. It doesn't matter to me. I swam, dang it.

Howie picked me up at the J and dropped me at my friend Jen's house. I hadn't seen her in a while. She and her family went on a road trip to Arkansas for spring break. She and her husband, Chris, have 3 little kids. Their oldest, Chloe, is 5. Sylvie is 3 and baby Jonah is about 9 months old. I like to joke that I am Jonah's girlfriend. He's always smiling at me with those 2 cute teeth, all drooly. Chris tried to show me Jonah's newest move, The Wave. Jen chimed in to let it be known that I have already seen The Wave, seeing as though I was the first person he ever waved to. I am honored. Be still, my beating heart.

After a quick hello at their crib, Jen and I set off on a little walk and talk. First stop, Baskin Robbins- or as I know it, 31 Flavors. We each got a shake and proceeded to walk in the drizzling rain. With our shakes. The shakes were gone way too fast. We both think they should last forever. I like the menu at Elsa's (owned by the same family that owns Kopp's frozen custard stand). On the first page it says "Life is short, eat dessert first." That was my motto today.

We caught eachother up on the goings on of our lives- their trip, our upcoming trip, Sylvie telling the mom of the little girl across the street that she looks like a man (!), gossip, blah, blah,blah...

I dropped her off at home, said goodbye to her and the fam and skidaddled on home. The rain was no longer drizzly, it was more of the droppy variety. Now I'm home on the couch, Otis curled up next to me.

Another good day off.

Blog day 2

I think this is my third day with about 6 hours sleep. Anyone who really knows me will be shocked that I'm even close to functioning. *8 hours is minimum for me.

Yesterday was a great day. Not only did I get up early and run, but we also headed over to Beans and Barley for brunch. The guest speaker at our Team Challenge meet up (what was his name, again?) suggested drinking coconut water after a run to replenish the electrolytes. The funny thing was that before we left for the park that morning, I was trying to make a "box cut" on the young Thai coconut I just got from Whole Foods. Needless to say, the coconut is still sitting in my fridge. Any experts with a knife want to help out? Before we sat down to brunch I ran over to the coolers at Beans and grabbed a couple bottles of coconut water. Howie and I decided to share one, just in case we didn't like the flavor. But, ya know what? It was good. And way better for us than Gatorade and all those other drinks full of High Fructose Corn Syrup. Yuck. Then it was a veggie egg white omlette and a blueberry pancake for me and How had eggs and a bagel. Oh. And coffee. Love coffee. I'm trying to change my whole eating thang. Trying to incorporate more raw fruits and veg. Breakfast is a tough place to do that. Especially at brunch. Especially after a run. And extra especially yesterday.

After brunch we headed back home to put on the finishing touches for our Open House. Which went pretty well. But until we have an offer...... I'm not going to get too excited.
Later in the day I got a massage and facial. Not such a bad day off! Somehow I still managed to go to bed at 2am. Probably because I was setting up this blog.

The only reason I got up so early again today was the noise outside my house. Road construction. Ugh. At least it forced me to get up and get moving. I packed for our trip to LA. We are leaving on Wednesday night. My mom will stay with Otis and Cocoa. Water the plants, etc.... Otis loves it when she babysits. She's always accidently dropping food on the floor for him.
With all this extra time being awake I made a rather fancy lunch for us today. 'Twas some manner of brown rice penne, or maybe it was whole wheat- who knows, with home made pest0 and asparagus (steamed for only 1 minute, nice and crunchy).

Pesto recipe:
a LARGE bunch of fresh basil leaves
about 1/3 cup raw sunflower seeds
about 1/3 cup EVOO (extra virgin olive oil, to those that don't watch Rachel Ray)
3 cloves garlic, pressed
1 tsp Himalayan Salt
lots of freshly ground black pepper
juice of 1/2 a lemon
about 1/2- 3/4 cup of water

Put it all in a blender. I LOVEEEEEEE my Vita Mix blender. So high powered!
Pour it on veggies, pasta, what evs. No need to cook it. Serve it RAW. Delicious.

Today's fitness hasn't happened yet. The trainer's recommendation is Stretch, Strengthen or Active Recovery. My plan is to take a walk (if it's not too cold, gotta love Wisconsin in April) and there's a yoga class tonight at the JCC. I'll let ya know how it all goes.

Oh, and we just got a call from a realtor. Someone wants to see our house tomorrow. Maybe we'll have an offer before we leave for LA? That'd be cool.

WELCOME TO MY NEW BLOG!

Hello Friends,

Let me start by saying that I am a hairdresser. Not a writer. I only went to one semester of college. And I studied German. So forgive me if you are offended by my ignoramus attempt at being a writer. English is my first language, but I never excelled at school. I'll be the first to admit that I was not interested. Looking back now, I know if I had put a tiny bit of work into studying I could have been a straight A student and gotten into UW-Madison. Well, we all know that didn't happen. And I'm glad it didn't. I believe I would never have gone to beauty school if I actually liked "real" school. I excelled at beauty school. Always got the top marks. I was born to be me! If I wasn't me, who would I be? Ok, enough of that. Let's get to the real reason I am here and why you are reading this nonsense.

I've decided to start this Blog to keep you all updated on my progress.
Two weeks ago today, Sunday March 28th, I went along with Howie (the husband) to the first of many weekly group training runs/walks with Team Challenge.
The meeting place: The Petitt Center (an indoor track around an Olympic speed skating training facility).
The time: 9am. I must be crazy. I like to sleep! 9 am on a Sunday morning. This better be good.
There I met a majority of my teammates that would be joining us for the Napa Valley Wine Country Half Marathon. We are all running (with some walking, for me) to support the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. Howie and I have 2 honorary people we are running for. My brother-in-law, Pete, and one of my best friend's father, Paul, both have Crohn's. It's amazing to hear the amount of people who have been affected by Crohn's or colitis. They seem to be crawling out from the woodwork when I tell them about our cause.
The race is in July. Did I mention that I am neither an athlete, racer, nor a runner? Well, cat's outta the bag. I'm not. I can't think of another person less competitive than me. So my goal here is to finish this half marathon. I don't care about the timing. Howie on the other hand... well he was "a high performance athlete" (as he likes to call himself) during high school and the beginning of college. I didn't meet him till he graduated from college, so I cannot attest to this alleged statement.
Not to bore you with the details here, but here are the details from start to finish...

Day 1: 3/28- I did a combo of running and walking. I forgot to count how many laps. So I'm sure I'm overestimating my speed, but I logged in 35 minutes at 4.5mph. Ha. I'm a great estimater. Did I mention that I was recovering from a cold? And that running in the cold air of the Petitt center made me feel as if my lungs were swimming in water? Oh, I guess I forgot to say that. But that's how it was.

Day 2: 3/29- 25 minutes at 4.5 miles an hour.

Day 3: 3/30- 40 minutes at 3.5 mph

Day 4: 3/31- 70 minutes at 3 mph

Day 5: 4/1- 60 minutes at 3.5 mph. Do you care that I also gardened for 60 minutes and cleaned the house for 60 minutes? Let's call that cross training. It was so nice that day. Like 80 degrees.

Day 6: 4/2- 60 minutes at 3.5 mph (I'm a machine! 6 days in a row. Taking the next day off.)

Day 7: rest

Week 1 Total: 410 minutes of exercise and.......14.675 MILES for the week!!! Kinda free styled this week. Next week will be following the Trainers recommendations.

Day 8: 4/4- 60 minutes @ 3.3 mph (Group training at Lake Park. Woohoo! Walked and chatted with Dave. Nice guy. Teacher. Major success with weight loss and exercise. Said he gave up carbonation and started eating slowly. Who knew? Amazing! )

Day 9: 4/5- 30 minutes @ 3.5 mph

Day 10: 4/6- 35 minutes @ 3.4 mph

Day 11: 4/7- 25 minutes @ 3.6 mph

Day 12: 4/8- 26:50 minutes @ 4.5 mph (2 mile run/walk around the track at the JCC)

Day 13: 4/9- rest

Day 14: 4/10- 30 minutes cross training (cleaned the house. what? we were having an Open House the next day. what? you need a house? ours is for sale. check it out. http://www.4672ardmore.com/

Week 2 Total: 146 minutes 50 seconds ( yes, I'm logging seconds) and 10.55 miles Not too shabby! Next week should be interesting. We leave for LA on Wednesday night. But Howie and I will be bringing our running shoes on our trip. So don't expect me to slack. I'm keeping up! Mark my words! 2 weeks down....12 more to go. WooHoo!!!

Day 15: 4/11- 47 minutes @ 4.2 mph ( Group run at Lake Park. Gorgeous Day! Brought my headphones and I'm glad I did. Managed to run most of the time. And by myself. Listened to the Are You In? De La Soul Nike mix that pulled me through the run. If you don't have it on your iPod, go get it! )
